Return value

\c 0 on success. #MBEDTLS_ERR_CIPHER_BAD_INPUT_DATA on parameter-verification failure. A cipher-specific error code on failure.

Notes

This function only supports AEAD algorithms, not key wrapping algorithms such as NIST_KW; for this, see mbedtls_cipher_auth_encrypt_ext(). If the context is based on PSA (that is, it was set up with mbedtls_cipher_setup_psa()), then it is required that \c tag == output + ilen. That is, the tag must be appended to the ciphertext as recommended by RFC 5116.
